Student Speaker & Department/Guest
Speaker
|
Amanda
Perkins – Student Rep: before
the holidays, there was a gingerbread contest held during the Winter
Wonderland event where the special needs class won 1st prize. This year’s Valentine’s Day event will
include red and white roses for sale (red for sweethearts, and white for
friends). The semiformal is planned
for March 25th, and preparations are underway for the banquet hall
and DJ. In light of the province wide
Healthy Schools initiative, Amanda briefly explained what the student store
sold: school spirit wear such as
sweaters with the Markville logo, chocolates, candies, and tickets for
dances, and other events; the store is not open during cafeteria hours; the
vending machines are an alternative to purchase chips, chocolate bars, etc. |

Co-operative
Community Based Education department presentation by Shelley Nicholson: we are
lucky to have this program offered at Markville; a student could earn 2 to 4
credits, gain valuable employment related skills, gain work experience, and
maturity; this is also a great way for a student to test the waters – see if
a certain type of work is for them.
There are many long standing and new employers that comply with the
strict standards for which the students are matched. There are 4 pathways (Work/Apprenticeship
OYAP/College/University), and 4 industries (Construction/Industrial/Motive
Power/Service trades) – for more details go to http://www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca/calendar/page.cfm?id=SCAL00022&sc=407&s=10&y=2007 |

School
Plan for Continuous Improvement SPCI presentation by Sean Hu-a-kam: the admin
team is currently in the 1st year of this 3 year plan; this is a
living document where the keys to success is dialog on the
direction/strategies, and execution of the action items outlined in the Plan;
some of the action items have been implemented year over year such as Parent
Engagement Nights organized by the admin team, and school council. A copy of the SPCI will be issued along
with the January Minutes. Please
peruse this document, and send in your thoughts/comments and they will be
added onto the February agenda. |
COUNCIL REPORT (Joyce/All)

Parent
Engagement Night: include
onto the February agenda list in preparation for the May event |
|
Secretary
position: as there
is no volunteer for this position (the current practice is this: the Treasurer – Nancy Elliott’s kind notes
and the Chair’s completion of the Minutes is what makes it possible to
deliver the completed product – Council Minutes), a rotational call out was
suggested during the meeting and with the aid of a laptop (as suggested by
Stephen) parents attending the meeting would be able to volunteer taking
electronic notes which will then be used to draw up the Minutes. |

Board
Policy #135.0 Food Services: the
key to success in making this document/Healthy Schools initiative will be to
have “healthful choices” whether they are offered in our vending machines,
cafeteria, or student store. We are
all on the same page when it comes to contributing to our students successes
and health. A copy of the policy is
