Department Presentation

Vicki Tavernese , Department Head, Foreign Services Language, demonstrated, using the smart board, how versatile and easy to manage, the FSL/International Languages site is http://www.markville.ss.yrdsb.edu.on.ca/teacher/languages/index.html

It would be a great asset for all subjects to create this type of access to information about their subjects for parents and students alike.  It was very informative.

Council Report (Joyce/All)

School Council Elections – all positions have been filled, as noted above.  It should also be mentioned that the Chair is responsible for the School Council Report.  It is a 1-pg. page summary of the year’s events.  The York Region School Board gives the Treasurer $500.00 and Markville SS matches this with $500.00.

Treasurers Report will be updated for next meeting

Subcommittees:

Constitution – to be reviewed

Parent Engagement – scheduled for April 2009

Staff Appreciation – to follow same format as last year

2 microwaves for student cafeteria – this is an 0708 item; as reported by Steve, one of the microwaves was damaged, and Steve will replace it by purchasing another one from a store

Administration Report (Admin team)

Growing pains were felt the beginning of the year due to a switch in the board computer systems - from a student admin system to a student management system.  From a Board perspective, not as much back end help needed.  Training has begun, will be much better in the long term.  Some problems were had when 100 Grade 12 students did not have a full schedule and 350 came to the office for a schedule change.  Also 200 Grade 11’s requested to change their schedule.

We are at our projection in terms of student numbers, which is approximately 1,300.  Hopefully no restructuring will be needed. Have many Markham District High School students coming here for a grade 12 semester.  With the opening of Bur Oak, hope not to lose students/staff.  Last year Bur Oak had Grade 9 and 10’s.  This year they have added Grade 11 and next year they will add Grade 12.  It was mentioned that a surprising number of students return to Grade 12 to complete the credit requirements to achieve their Highschool diploma before entering a career or continuing their education in College, University, etc…

Dept presentations to come this year: Library, Computers, Geography, Art, English, History, Tech., etc…

New topics to be discussed each month – For October: Boys Club
