The Civil Rights Movement
Important Dates:
- 1954 - Brown v. Board of Education - unconstitutional to separate school children by race
- December, 1955 - Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat on the bus
- 1955 - Montgomery Bus Boycott
- 1957 - State of Arkansas challenges the Federal Government when a federal court orders that nine African American students be admitted to an all-white high school in Little Rock Arkansas - State Governor, Orval Faubus sent the National Guard to prevent the students from attending - Eisenhower in an effort to protect the students sent 1,000 paratroopers and nationalized 10,000 members of the Arkansas National Guard to surround the school
- 1961 - Civil Rights activists calling themselves "Freedom Riders" ride buses into segregated terminals throughout the South
- 1963 - Violence in Birmingham, Alabama when a demonstration led by Martin Luther King Jr. is broken up on the orders of Police Commissioner Eugene "Bull" Connor using fire hoses, clubs and dogs - Kennedy is furious and sends 3000 troops to restore peace in the city - this motivates Kennedy to introduce a new Civil Rights Bill that will outlaw segregation throughout the country
- August, 1963 - March on Washington - 100th anniversary of the Emanipation Proclamation - more than 200,000 demonstrators are present and King gives his now famous, "I Have a Dream" speech
- 1964 - Martin Luther King wins Nobel Peace Prize
- 1964 - July 2, the Civil Rights Act is passed - the strongest Civil Rights Act since Reconstruction
- 1965 - "March for Freedom" begins
- 1965 - Voting Rights Act is passed
- 1968 - Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated
- 1972 - Congress approves Equal Rights Amendment

- Each group will examine one of the FOUR Sections from the text book
- You are going to use one of the following methods to teach the information to the class - PowerPoint, Smart Notebook, Photo Story, Movie Maker, Concept Map (if you have another idea come and see me)
- You will create a short skit of the content in your section
