Thirteen Colonies Mapping Task

Objective

Students will apply the skills of reading and interpreting a thematic map to a map showing the settlement of colonies in North America between 1587 and 1760.

Preliminary Questions

Answer the following questions on a separate piece of paper in complete sentences and paragraph form.

1.      Which Europeans countries claimed land in the New World?

2.      What role did the Catholic Church play in the European settlement of North America?

3.      Why did England wait until the 1600s to establish permanent colonies in America?

4.      Why did England become interested in North America?

Map Activity


1.  Complete the attached map according to page 57 of textbook. 
            - Label all colonies
            - Label regional boundaries
            - Create a legend according to the three time periods in which settlement took place.

 

Analysis

Answer the following questions on a separate piece of paper in complete sentences and paragraph form.

1.      There are three divisions within the English colonies. What are they and which present day states are included in each division?

2.      Why do you think the early English settlements were along the Atlantic coast?

3.      In what year were English settlements established in what is present day Maine and Georgia?  Why do you think most of the early settlements were north of North Carolina?

4.      Why didn’t the English colonies extend south of Georgia?

5.      In what year were the inland areas settled?  What do you think the colonies spread westward then?
