Travelled to Spain during the Spanish Civil war and was disturbed to see many soldiers died due to loss of blood
Determined to stem the loss of life, designed first mobile blood-transfusion service
Provided lots of medical support to Chinese revolutionaries



Historical Significance
Acquired hero-status in war by introducing the Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (M.A.S.H.) which provided medical care to soldiers on field as opposed to waiting for them to arrive in hospitals.
Saved many lives by reducing loss of blood when soldiers were immediately attended to
Acquired hero-status in China by working endlessly to provide a wide range of medical care to Chinese peasants
