Battle of Dieppe |
|
What? August 1942: 5000 Canadian soldiers, 3000 British commandos, and American Rangers were picked to attack strongly defended port in France Defeated before battle even began due to well-placed German defense forces Casualty tolls were high Historical Significance Saturday Night magazine called Dieppe Raid 'another Passchendaele" In recent years, there has been much debate over whether the raid was just to appease Stalin Questions have been raised about the value of attack as compared with the very high cost of human lives Some people say that soldiers shouldn't have been sent out on a mission with so little success while others state that such an attack can be justified by long-term gains |
