What? • August 1942: 5000 Canadian soldiers, 3000 British commandos, and American Rangers were picked to attack strongly defended port in France • Defeated before battle even began due to well-placed German defense forces • Casualty tolls were high Historical Significance • Saturday Night magazine called Dieppe Raid 'another Passchendaele" • In recent years, there has been much debate over whether the raid was just to appease Stalin • Questions have been raised about the value of attack as compared with the very high cost of human lives • Some people say that soldiers shouldn't have been sent out on a mission with so little success while others state that such an attack can be justified by long-term gains
