What? • alliance made up by Germany and its allies (including Austria-Hungary and Italy) • also known as the "Central Powers" Historical Significance • these alliances were supposed to keep peace in Europe, but ironically, it helped to trigger WW1 • this is because war with any allied nation meant war with the whole alliance, making it dangerous if war were to break out anywhere in Europe
