horrible conditions
swampy, wet, filled w/ mice, dead bodies and decay



Historical Significance
the trench system was the main way they fought WW1
killed many many soldiers in battle
even the most patriotic soldiers were hoping for a "blighty", which is a wound serious enough to cause the injured soldier to be sent back to England
