“Defining Moments in My History”:  Presentation

Examining history can be exciting, enlightening, engaging or to some, quite boring.  To begin to understand and enjoy history, it must become relevant.  What is your history?  Once you know more about your history, learning about the past can become more interesting as it applies to your family.  This assignment will trace your family’s history throughout the last century… the history behind you.

Task
Students will create a visual presentation that traces their “history” to present orally to the class.  This can be in the form of a visual poster, a powerpoint presentation, picture slideshow, a video etc.  The oral presentation should be approximately 5 minutes, and should explain any of the following questions:

  • Where were you born?
  • Where is your family originally from (family, parents, grandparents)?
  • How did you / they come to live in Canada?  When? Why did your family choose Canada?
  • Describe your / their immigration experience (reasons to come, reasons to leave etc.)
  • Was any of your family alive during the World Wars or other wars?  What was life like?  How did the war change society?
  • Has any of your family been involved in any wars (ie. World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, civil wars etc.)  Explain.
  • Are your parents “babyboomers”?  Compare their life as a teen compared to yours.
  • In your life, what major world events have “changed” history?  How does this compare to your parents’ experiences of world events that they have lived through?
  • How have these experiences of yourself and your family influenced or affected your life?
  • What have you learned about your family that is the most intriguing or interesting?  What new information did you discover?
  • Ask any other questions that you may have to understand more about your family’s history!

NOTE:  powerpoint presentations etc. must be brought in on a CD or jump drive (NO EMAILS!!!)
