What? In 1916, Emily Murphy was made the first woman judge in British Empire; a lawyer challenged her right to judge any cases because she was woman. Said that no woman was a "person" in the eyes of the law Started the fight for women to be considered a "person" in law; women's groups asked the prime minister to appoint women in the Senate, but prime minister refused Historical Significance Later on, as the case got more publicity, prime minister changed his mind, and Cairine Wilson was the first woman appointed to be a Senate in Canada |
