A Quick Survey of Renaissance Art

 

The purpose of this assignment is to introduce you to a variety of examples of Renaissance art, to appreciate their similarities and differences, and to define the characteristics of the movement.

 

Step One:

Locate works by the following artists on the internet.  A good starting point is

Group One

·           Botticelli

·           Leondardo da Vinci

·           Raphael

·           Michelangelo

·           Donatello

Group Two

·           van Eyck

·           Bosch

·           Brueghel, Pieter the Elder

·           Dürer

·           Holbein the Younger

 

For each artist, list and describe their works of art.  Note the subject of the work, technique, and use of color.  Is their anything unusual or singular about a work or works?

 

Record any questions you have about the artist, his works, or the Renaissance that come to you while you are working.

 

Step Two:

Based on your observations, answer the following questions:

 

  1. What characteristics of the Renaissance are reflected in its art?
  2. Are there noted similarities/differences between the two groups of artists?
  3. What connections are seen or not seen between the art of the Middle Ages and the artists of the Renaissance?
  4. To what extent have you discovered evidence of a “Rebirth” or a “new age” in this assignment?
