THREE CHOICES FOR YOUR
FINAL EXAM ESSAY:
1. Nationalism
has been one of the most prominent ideologies in the shaping of western
civilizations for about 150 years. In an essay,
assess the validity of this statement using three nations as case studies.
2. When a western journalist asked Gandhi
for his position on “western civilization,” Gandhi replied, “Western
civilization? I think it would be a good idea.” Professor McKay, an author
and an academic would disagree with Gandhi by stating “our Western heritage
may rightly inspire us with pride and measured self-confidence" based on
“the regenerative strength of the Western ideals of individual rights,
representative government, and nationhood in the European homeland”. After a
semester of studying modern western history, would you agree with Gandhi or
McKay? Use at least three specific references to support
your position.
3. Over the course of the semester, we
have studied a number of political, social, intellectual, and cultural topics
that have transformed modern history. From the list below, choose three that in your evaluation,
have had the most important and lasting effects on western society in the
present time. At least ONE of your
choices must be from before the 19th century.
