During
Student Led Tutorials (SLT), a group
of students will conduct a tutorial session.
Each group member will present, ask questions, and lead a discussion
with the class. The focus of the tutorial
will follow from the lecture or topic area of the week and is based on an
assigned reading.
One
week before the tutorial the leaders must:
ü
collect the reading from the teacher
ü
carefully read and understand the reading (including postscript)
ü
write a point-form summary of the reading
ü
create a glossary of at least 10 new terms from the reading
ü
develop 8-10 questions (ranging from comprehension to discussion) and
record the answer to these questions
ü
operate an “on-reserve” system to distribute the readings to classmates
(ensure all the readings are resubmitted)
On
the Thursday before the tutorial the leaders must:
ü
meet with the teacher to submit the question sheet and review the
answers
ü
hand the question sheet out to classmates (after
meeting with the teacher!)
During
the tutorial session the leaders must:
ü
briefly review the reading with classmates
ü
include a short interactive activity to get people involved
ü
ask questions and provide feedback (basically stimulate a discussion
based on the readings)
ü
help guide the discussion to keep the class on topic
One
week after the tutorial session each tutorial leader must:
ü
submit a 2 page (typed) reflection of the reading that
outlines how you feel about the author’s thesis or subject. You must include clear references to the
reading, opinions that were asserted during the tutorial and discussions and
your own opinions.
What is the
responsibility of the class during these tutorial sessions?
ü
Attend all tutorials
ü
Read, take notes, and answer questions for every reading
ü
Participate in tutorial discussions
ü
Review tutorial materials for the final exam
