Chapter 13 Notes

-in the future there will be three major types of wars: economic. Cultural, and environmental

-The RMA (revolution in military affairs) will affect each of these as it can lead to future conflicts

Economic War:

-competition between countries, the health of the economy may become a future security issue

-Luttwak: countries will battle for territory, religion, resourses but also for economic supremacy – development of new mercantilism

-countries with a sound economy can maintain a sound military

-zero sum games will be the means to achieve victory in these economic wars

Cultural Wars:

-a review of the clash between civilizations by Huntington

-it is the difference between cultures which will lead to the clash

-West VS the Rest also the country kin syndrome

Environmental conflicts:

-competition for resources (oil, water, fisheries, land)

-to ensure victory armies will target resources (ruin water supplies, salting the fields)

-examples of future conflicts will be over Canada’s supply of water and the Jordan River Basin

RMA:

-development of stealth technology and decrease the fog of war

-armies will be able to have better simulations for battles

-increase of accuracy in missile combat

-source for future wars (creation of the security dilemma)
