- Imhotep: One of the most famous names in Pyramid history is Imhotep. Imhotep was an Egyptian architect that historians call a genius. Imhotep's contributions to Egyptian history were so profound that he was essentially defined, and rose to serve the right hand of the Pharaoh Djoser. Living during the reign of Djoser, in the third dynasty, the brialliant Imhotep was the first non- ruler who's life had been recorded and passed on through history. On a statue of Imhotep, that is in a royal funeral complex, was a inscription that read "The chancellor of the king of Lower Egypt, the first after the King of Upper Egypt, Administrator of the great palace, hereditary lord, the high priest of Heliopolis, Imhotep the builder, the sculpter, and the maker of stone vases." Imhotep was the first architect who Designed and supervised the first stone building, and the first pyramid ( also made of stone). Imhotep is most famous for creating the "step Pyramid", which seemingly had "steps" that were towards heaven. This pyramid was the embodiment of the Egyptians faith and was built 2650 B.C.E. In the end, the Step Pyramid emerged as the the first of monumental architecture created by an artist.
- Pyramids of Giza: There are three large pyramids located at Giza. They were all built during the fourth dynasty (2575-2465 B.C.E.), and were all built for different people.(1) The first, and largest is Kufu's Pyramid. King Kufu ruled for 23 years, and the building of this Pyramid took about 20 years. The pyramid is 481 ft. tall and is composed of 2.3 million limestone blocks. King
Khufu is also known by the Greek name "Cheops." Khufu is the son of Snefru, who built the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid (the first true pyramid) at Dashur. (2) The second Pyramid was built for King Khafre (possibly Kufu's son), and is smaller than the first. this one is in better condition because of it's innovative design (large blocks of limestone encassed in fine lining slabs were set at the center of the complex). Khafre's brother was Djedefre, and Khafre had to wait for his brothers rule to end before he can claim his place as Emperor. There are rumors of a problem with the succession of Khafre. Some authorities
maintain that Djedefre may have even stole the throne, perhaps as a younger
brother of Khafre, and that Khafre may have even murdered him. (3) The third Pyramid, the smallest of the three, was built by Khafre's eldest son, Menkaure. The three pyramids of Giza are all side by side and ironically they the people who they were built for are all related. They were together during their life time and they will remain together for eternity.
