*Canada's Environment in the 20th Century

DEVELOPED BY: Laurie Chu 2006

*Summary;

Throughout the years, Canada has used many different methods to preserve the environment and keep it clean for the future generations. Solving many environmental problems such as smog, acid rain, water contamination, pollution, holes in the ozone are all environmental issues. But what is surprising is that we do more and more damage to the environment everyday. Using common household products such as hair spray, and nail polish, we damage and cause depletion of the ozone layer which make the sun rays much more dangerous than it already is. Although many environmentalists and people in the government that care deeply about the environment it is almost impossible to reverse the effects and what has already been done. Therefore, all we can do is to slow down the process of whatmight happen and prevent future damages to occur.

In conclusion, Ontario has always tried to help motivate others to protect the environment and the people living in it. Although there are still several environmental issues that need to be solved, the Ontario government and it's citizens will always be willing to help out.

*Historical Importance;

The environment has always been an important issue in Canada's history. Including many various charities ran by non-profit organizations, there is also the annual Earth Day that started in 1970 and happens every April 22. Each year, Earth Day is a day that tries to motivate us to help contribute to a cleaner environment. Not only are concerned environmentalists trying to help, but the government is also contributing to this issue also. On May 10, 2006, the Government of Ontario joined a legal fight to protect Ontario's air quality. The government has also provided the Quinte Conservation with $109,000 to asses threats that the local drinking water might supply. Besides trying to stop the environmental disasters, they are also trying to stop it before it starts by not producing large factories that produce large amounts of pollution. On May 9 of 2006, Bryant and Broten filed a case to stop the production of a Cinergy Corporation in the United States. Because of it's coal-fired energy, it produces large amounts of pollution into the air that travels over to Canada. More then half of Ontario's air pollution is from the United States. Because of the United States, there have been over 2,700 premature deaths, more than 14,000 emergency rooms visits caused by suffocation and dirty resources, and more than $5.2 billion in health and environmental damages each year. The worst year for Ontario would be 2005. There had been the most smog days there had ever been: 15 smog alerts over 53 days.
