Canada in the 21st Century : Creation of Nunavut

DEVELOPED BY: Alex Faubert

Historical Summary

"Our land." This is what Nunavut means in the Inuit language, Inuktitut. The creation of Nunavut has certainly benefited Canada, and more importantly, the Inuit who finally got their own land and control over it. It was important for the native Inuit of Canada, who had lost respect and got no recognition, to gain self-rule and control over their own institutions. After a number of plebiscites voting overwhelmingly in favour of self-determination, Nunavut finally became a province. Although, with the new happiness of victory also came controversy. Reversing assimilation, regaining a sense of identity, and suicide problems were big problems for the newfound provinces.
