Summary The northern Canadian seal hunt is
an environmental issue currently under question. The hunters are claiming it is part of our
heritage and there way of life, but environmentalists claim that they are wiping out the seal population, leaving both sides in a standstill.
The hunt, which normally takes place in Nova Scotia Canada, is being
severely and more critically questioned with every passing day. Fishermen
say that they are destroying the fish population and they need to be
killed off in order to preserve the fishing industry. But if the seals are
so desperate that they need to swim into a net to get food, then it's not
the seal's fault that there is no fish. The cod have been over-fished and
there simply are very few left. It's not that there are thousands of seals
eating all the stock, we can't pass the blame onto creatures that are only
trying to survive in the only way they can. |
Historical Importance. The seal hunt, though barbaric, is a key part of Canadian history and culture. Not only does it have a great foundation in our culture, but there are many uses of it. Seal fur coats are considered a luxury, seal oil is used for lamp fuel, cooking oil and the meat is considered a high source of protein. However, the seal hunt is being protested, since it is a barbaric slaughter of the species, that is slowly but surely killing off every seal in Canada's arctic waters. Fishermen claim that the seals need to be killed to 'restore the natural balance' to the waters. But, what use is the natural balance if you are destroying one creature to hunt another? |
