| Quebec Seperatism PAGE DEVELOPED BY: Thomas Keroglidis 2006 |
| Summary of Issue Ever since Quebec joined Canada through Confederation, they have felt displaced, and there were claims that they were slowly losing their identity as a people and a province. The idea was formulated for quebec to leave Canada and become a sovereign nation. This resulted in massive outcries and protests against the idea. Soon later, a political party was formed called the Bloc Quebecios, who's main political objective was to fight for Quebec's sovereignty. In 1980, a referendum was held regarding Quebec's right to seperate, and it was defeated by a large margain. Then once again in 1995, another referendum was held, and though the results were extremely close, it had once again been defeated. This continues to be a heated debate not only in Quebec but across all of Canada. TOPICS ![]() |
Historical Importance This ongoing debate is very important to Canada's history and Canada's future. If Quebec were to seperate it would change the face of Canada forever. Not only will it seperate the maritime provinces from the rest of Canada, it will also have a great impact on Canada's economics. Quebec currently owes Canada 125 billion dollars, and if they were to seperate they would not be able to pay off this debt. This would not only be catostrophic to Quebec's citizens, it would also cripple Canada's economy.
