Key Definitions / Terms
• Brahmin- the highest class. They serve as priests and religious teachers. Their goal is knowledge and education.

• Kshatriya-  The second highest group in the caste system. They serve as warriors, rulers. Their goal is political power and diplomacy. They need physical strength and courage, governing skills

 • Vaishya- The third highest group in the Caste System. The serve as merchants or farmers. They work for wealth and commerce. Their duties are to manage wealth and trade with other societies. They require management and entrepreneurial skills.

• Sudra- The lowest group in the Caste System. They were usually servants and laborers. Their goal is to attain manual skills. Their main duty is to serve other castes.

•Untouchables- They are the fifth group outside the Caste System. They are called 'untouchables' because they engage in what are considered unclean occupations, such as tanning leather, removing dead animals and washing toilets.


Historical Significance
• By the end of the Vedic Period, Indian society was organized into categories commonly known as castes. The basic structure of the the Caste System seems to have its roots in Vedics hymns on creation, which divided humanity into four classes, Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Sudra



Interesting Facts
•
 The Untouchables- They engage in unclean jobs, such as cleaning toilets, removing dead animals, and tanning leather

• Indians are born into each class according to their karma from their last life

• People of different castes live very different lives and are not allowed to dine together or marry each other.
