| Canada in the 21st Century: Caledonia-Standoff PAGE DEVELOPED BY: Jeremy Kwong 2006 |
Summary: The Six Nations aboriginal tribe resides in Caledonia, Ontario. In mid-October, they sent a warning to Henco Industries, for building on native lands, which they claim was given to them 200 years ago. The city's plan was to build 250 new homes on the 40 hectare site. Six Nations tribe then began to set camps on the construction site, and created a road blockade on Highway 6. After a while, they lowered the blockade on the highway as an act of good will after Ontario banned construction on the site, but later a non-native group set up a parallel blockade on Highway 6 and tensions rose immediately after that.

Historical Importance: The recent event has caused an economical problem in the town of Caledonia, because of the power out they had earlier through the whole town, closing down 17 schools, and called a lot of policemen onto the scene to prevent any violence. It made some stress for ontario's political party, as they had to schedule many meetings to find a decision to calm the native protestors.
