Summary Telecommunications
is the transmission of signals over a distance for the purpose of communicating.
Today telecommunications usually involves electromagnetic waves using
electronic transmitters but in the past it involved using smoke signals,
or drums. There are many different networks to support the different
devices such as the public telephone network for the telephone, or the
radio network for the radio. One of the most widely used telecommunications
works through computers using the Internet. The Internet (first connected in 1991) runs the Worlwide
Wide Web, which links to the computer networks using fiber-optics and
copper wires. These interconnectected computer networks work together
to carry various services and information, such as electronic mail,
online chat, and interlinked web pages. No one person or group of people invented the internet.
Importance The Internet is already being used by over 15 million people worldwide. This makes the Internet a very important source of communication in todays society. This communication effects Canada not only socially, but economically. Many companies either use or base their businesses on e-business (online business). E-business adoption can lead to significant cost reduction and increased
revenues of up to 150 per cent. Increased revenues on businesses nationwide can have a significant
impact on Canada's productivity and overall economic strength. An increase of communication will also add to Canada's identity as a nation. A spread of online media can effect each person as an individual making us who we are today.
