Historical Importance
1946-1964
The baby boomers had a major impact on Canadian society. The first effect
was the need of new schools and teachers to accommodate for the increase
in the population of youth. About 500 000 new students entered school
each year. In the 1970s the first wave of baby boomers began to enter
the job market. The boomers created a market for fast food, clothing
fads, popular music, and cosmetics.As
young adults entered the job market, unemployment rates increased. As
more boomers were searching for work, jobs could not be created fast
enough to keep up with this number.
The baby boomers are now aged between 50-65 and are about to retire.
The approaching retirement of the baby-boom generation has become a
public concern--partly because of the budgetary pressures that will
develop when baby boomers collect Social Security and Medicare benefits,
but also because of claims that boomers are not saving enough private
savings to finance their retirement. Will Canada’s health care
and pension service able to hold out the strain?
