Impact on Telecommunications and Internet on Canada
DEVELOPED BY: Jeannie Fung  2006

Summary:

Telecommunication is the transmission of signals over a distance for the purpose of communication. Today telecommunication is widespread and devices that assist the process such as the television, radio and telephone are common in many parts of the world. The earliest form of telecommunica-tions came from smoke signals and drums. These then evolved what we have now, starting with the telegraph invented in 1843 by Samuel Morse.

The Internet on the other hand (also known as the Net) is the worldwide, publicly accessible system of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by using the standard internet protocol (IP). Internet protocols consists of millions of smaller networks, which together carry various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, and interlinked web pages. The earliest versions of the internet appeared in the late 1950's but practical concepts began during the late 1960's and 1970's. And by the 1980's, technologies we now recognize as the basis of modern internet were widespread, and in 1990 the World Wide Web was introduced.

Historical Importance

Together, telecommunication and the internet has impacted Canada and Canadians in many ways. The sudden wave of resources on the internet has made education and schooling more relaxed and enjoyable. Students find the internet very useful because everything they need is presented right in front of them just by one click of their hand. The internet is easily accessible and provides and variety of different resources. Also not only does the internet help students it also has an affect on businesses and the economy. The way people conduct businesses has vastly changed with the wide use of the internet. Many businesses have websites that allow people to conduct businesses "on-line". This is a field where all experts say will grow and advance in the years to come. The internet creates new ways for citizens to communicate, congregate, and share information. Everyday, the internet expands by the political, social, and economical activities of people all around the world, and it is obvious that the internet has and will continue to change the way we live our lives.
Telecommunication is another factor of the 21st century that has helped impact Canada and Canadians in many ways. For example, the widespread adoption of optic fibres gave Canadians the benefit of increased communication. Today, these optic fibres are able to carry 25 times as many telephone calls as TAT-8 wires. Also radio, another source of telecommunication, is an asset to our economy. Aircrafts uses AM radio stations for navigation, without them pilots would not know where they're going. Television is another source of telecommunication and without television, our lives wouldn't be the same. We are able to access the news, the weather and find entertainment though television. Therefore that's why i think that telecommunication has impacted us and is important in Canadian history.
