| Canada and The Seal Hunt BY: JAMES PETRAS |
Pam donating money to help the seals |
Summary:The annual seal hunts take place off the coast of Northern Newfoundland, every spring when the Harps Seals migrate. The government gives fisherman the right to kill around 300,000 a year since 1968, to boost economic profit. This has been a horriable thing to do and in my opinion a dark spot for Canada. The government seems to believe that lowering the number of seals that can be killed to around 100,000 that this will help appease the people. I believe that they refuse to do anything to stop it because it is such a large profitable industry. Many protesters like Brigette Bardot, who is now 70, and even Pamela Anderson beleive that this is a wrong and cruel thing to do. They have held protests and fundraisers to help stop the seal hunts but only to come up short. Unfortunately the seal hunts still go on today, still killing hundreds of thousands a year.Hisorical Immportance:It is an economical importance to the fishermen and the government. The fishermen gain income at a time when they are unable to fish. The government gains on the taxes and trades on seal based products. In the eyes of many people, Canada is viewed as a country that promotes the slaughter of baby seals. If the government continues to allow this, it may lead to the extinction of the species.Article#1: CritiqueArticle#2: Critique |
