Cooperative Education is an educational program that integrates classroom theory with practical experience in the workplace.  The program reinforces and expands upon a subject area that the student wishes to explore as a possible future career.  It will allow the student to acquire first-hand experience with professionals in our community and the most up-to-date equipment in use today.    The experience and the contacts will be helpful in applying for apprenticeships, future jobs and/or post secondary school education.

Requirements for Admission:

Must take a related subject course concurrently or prior to co-op.

Must have the commitment and maturity to handle the curriculum as well as the experiential learning.

Must complete a co-op application with two teacher references, and permission of parent/guardian.

Must arrange an interview with a Community Based Education teacher.

Must have a history of good attendance and work habits.

COP3X9 (2 Credits):  This course allows Grade 11 and Grade 12 students to earn TWO high school credits by working at a work placement of their interest and by completing the academic in-school portion.  Students may gain work experience by working three hours in the morning or afternoon at a placement.

COP4X0 (4 Credits):  This co-op opportunity is available for Grade 11 or 12 students who would like to earn FOUR high school credits while exploring a work placement of their interest by completing the academic in-school portion.  While working six hours per day, students will be able to observe the entire daily routines of their placement and gain valuable career information to assist them with their post secondary school choices.  Students returning for a fifth year may find this extremely beneficial.

International Cooperative Education to Ecuador (ICE)  REG3X6 or REG4X6

Spend 14 weeks of 2nd semester in ECUADOR, speaking Spanish and immersed in the culture of the ancestors of the mighty Incas, amidst the towering Andes Mountains, all the while earning SIX high school credits!!  Excellent preparation for those interested in careers and further education in the areas of communications, cultural relations, education, environment, foreign service, health sciences, international development, international business, politics, social work, sociology and more.

Course package includes the following 6 credits: 
Interdisciplinary Studies (1), Human Patterns & Interactions (1), Canadian & World Politics (1), Interdisciplinary Studies Co-op (2), Spanish Co-op (1)

Available for grade 11, grade 12 or GAP 5th year high school students
(must be 16 years old at time of departure)

Discovering the Workplace GLD201 (1 Credit):  This course provides the student with opportunities to discover and develop the workplace Essential Skills and Work Habits to be successfully employed.  Understanding will develop through practical hands-on experiences in the school and in the community.  Students will explore occupations of interest through experiential learning (e.g. worksite visits, guest speakers, job shadowing, simulations, entrepreneurial projects and work experience).  This course will support the student’s plan for continued learning and work.

Navigating the Workplace GLD40 (3 Credits):  This course provides students with opportunities to develop the workplace essential skills and work habits required for success in all types of workplaces.  Students will explore occupations and careers of interest through participation in real workplace experiences (e.g. information interviews, work experiences).  They will make plans for continued learning and work, work with others to design learning experiences, and investigate the resources and support required to make a smooth transition to their postsecondary destination.

Two of your co-op credits are recognized as compulsory credits for your diploma.
