International Co-op Ecuador (ICE)

Program Overview
International Cooperative Education combines cross-cultural living with international community service work experience.  Students live with host families and work on agricultural, community development, educational, environmental, local business, or social work projects.

Participants
York Region students who:

  1. Are 16 years of age by departure
  2. Are committed to pre-departure orientation, overseas placement and follow-up activities

Goals

  1. To foster understanding of cross cultural sensitivity and development issues
  2. To promote the study of Spanish and further overall communication skills
  3. To develop transferable life skills and attitudes including:  adaptability, analysis, confidence, independence, initiative, integrity, organization, perseverance, problem solving, responsibility, stress management and time management
  4. To share and apply one’s ICE experience through future involvement in Canadian or other communities

Prerequisites

Required by January of departure year

  1. Minimum 1 credit in Spanish (LWSBD or higher)
  2. One grade 11 “U” or “M” course in English, Canadian and World Studies or Social Sciences and Humanities.
  3. Preparatory ICE course activities

Recommended courses

  1. Moderns:  Grade 12 Spanish (LWSDU)
  2. Canadian and World Issues:  Geography (CGW4U, CGD3M); History (CHY4U, CHI4U); Economics (CIA4U)
  3. Social Sciences and Humanities:  (HPW3C, HPC30, HSP3M, HSB4M, HZT4U, HPD4E)
