STUDIES IN LITERATURE GRADE 12 UNIVERSITY PREP:  SCIENCE FICTION & FANTASY LITERATURE

This course is designed for students with a special interest in the genres of Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature, and the literary criticism of these genres.  Students will analyze a range of forms and stylistic elements of Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature and respond personally, critically, and creatively to them.  They will also assess critical interpretations, write analytical essays, and complete an independent study project.

Prerequisite:  English 11 University Prep

 

The following units will serve as the focus of the course work:

Novel Study:                             Text – Brave New World and The Lord of the Rings                                                         (The Fellowship…)

Short Stories:                            Text – Viewpoints 12 & Man and His World

Media:                                      Text – various/handouts, television & movie videos

Essay/Language Study:               Text – Reference Points & various handouts

Evaluation will be based on the following guidelines:

 

TERM WORK:                            70%

Thinking/Inquiry                                               15%

 (research, process writing, homework, note taking, readings)

Knowledge/Understanding                                 20%

                                    (writing assignments, essays, summative tests)

Communication                                                20%

                                    (language study and usage)
