Text Box: Support Programs for English Language Learners
There are various support systems available at Markville for English Language Learners.
•	When you register, you will be introduced to a Student Translator who speaks your native language. The translator will help the newcomer integrate with ease into the new Canadian high school environment.
•	Student Translators are always available to students through Mrs. Avgeropoulos in the Guidance Office. Come and ask for one if you need some help.
•	Mrs. Avgeropoulos is also available in the Guidance office to see any ELL students with concerns.
•	Student progress is monitored on an ongoing basis, even after the student is no longer in the ESL program.
•	A Settlement Worker is available in the Guidance Office every Friday to help students in adjusting to life in Canada.
•	Accommodations are in place to help ELL students succeed. Accommodations may be in the form of extra time to write quizzes, tests, and exams, using bilingual dictionaries, or working with peer tutors.
•	The Peer Tutoring Club offers tutoring twice a week after school. Senior students assist younger students in understanding their homework in all courses. Many of our tutors speak different languages.
• Students from our Lead and Learn course also act as teacher assistants in the classrooms to help students who may be having difficulty in a course.
